It's the Sunday after my last day of work for the year, and the day before I leave for vacation, but where am I? Yes, in my office at work. The library's closed and I'm mostly alone in the building, and I'm taking advantage of a couple of quiet hours to try to spend a few thousand dollars on books before I leave town. This is more fun than it sounds, especially as I have hulu on as I order things. I kind of like being here when nobody else is. It's peaceful and I get more accomplished in two hours than often can in a full work day full of meetings and interruptions. In a few minutes, I'm bailing out of here in search of some food.

Have a happy Christmas, if that's what you celebrate. See some of you in person in the new year!

Today, when somebody mentioned the rapture, I remembered something kind of funny. You know those bumper stickers that say, "In case of Rapture, this car will be unmanned?" Well, the first time I saw one of those, I thought it meant the woman driving the car was a lesbian and the sticker was making some sort of reference to back-seat sex. I was in high school at the time, so it made perfect sense to me. I was raised Lutheran (ELCA flavor), and we're not big on rapture fantasies. At least not that kind.

Anyway, I totally snickered during somebody's Very Serious Story today because of this memory.

I am freezing here in my office, trying to get as much done as possible this afternoon. Rick's planning to put in a half day's work tomorrow, but I'm determined not to come in to the library on the 4th of July, opting to sleep in and meet up with R for festivities when he's off.

But I can't think straight with the cold. It's 78 degrees outside, so I'm thinking I'll just bail out of here with a huge stack of catalogs and go order books outside somewhere there's wireless. This is ridiculous.

Several nights of restlessness and little sleep kicked my ass harder than usual this morning. I fell asleep in the shower, standing up. I only woke when I started to fall.

Walked outside to see it fucking snowed again. Exchanged skirt and heels for jeans and boots. Grumbled.

Didn't get to campus til 9am, then there was no parking available. Parked at R's house and walked the 6 blocks in the cold, with no hat.

Moved offices yesterday afternoon, and the systems guys transferred my phone and pc. This morning, had no connectivity.

Resolution to stop buying coffees was broken by 10am. Also, lack of breakfast eating played into poor decision to eat first pastry I've had in months.

Sugar crash

Realized checking account overdrawn and somehow auto-draft from savings didn't work. Had to argue with bank to refund fees and fix.

Realized cell doesn't get service in new office.

R came by to work on survey instrument during lunch. Got distracted and ate only a little salad.

Received call from colleague wondering why I didn't show up for reference shift. Could be related to having no outlook calendar. Also, memory obviously failing.

Got woo-ed at on street, so reflexively gave finger. Then noticed some of R's students (who know me) witnessed entire event.

Started unpacking boxed in office, lost steam and interest.

Realized it is not Friday and therefore tomorrow must get up and go to work again.

Walked with R back to his place, laid on floor helplessly while he made dinner. Felt achy and sore of throat.

Was ignored by R in favor of internets.

Reluctantly left couch and cozy R to go to chamber orchestra performance, though never got around to changing out of jeans. Kept falling asleep during program. Forgot name of new faculty member I've met several times, unable to introduce him to colleague during intermission.

Returned to messy home, listened to neighbors slam and bang.

Can't sleep again.

At least tomorrow's Friday, and I get to drink wine and lay around after work.

Over the past several weeks, I've had several incidents where I've started to get sick, but nothing ever completely took hold. I'm happy I still have my tonsils (first line of defense) and seem to have a generally strong immune system. Rick has had two colds over the past couple of months, and I haven't caught them, despite the constant food/drink sharing, kissing, breathing on me while he sleeps (sorry, pet peeve). Usually my almost-sick feeling starts with a sore throat and/or swollen glands and a vague sense of being not quite right. Yesterday afternoon, I experienced this, but the unease was stronger than usual and I was quickly overwhelmed with nausea and being overheated. I called Rick because it was almost time to go to class* and I wanted him to come over sooner. In other words, I was whiny. And I never whine**, so he didn't know what to do with me.

After sitting outside in the cold air for a while, I felt better, but I barely made it through class without passing out. You know that feverish feeling where your head is all fuzzy and you can't quite keep up with the conversation? Yeah, that sucks. I should have stayed home today, but it was meetings and teaching mania, so I just tried to deal and ended up feeling lots better. The only thing that seems to have stuck is cranky sinuses and a runny nose which is classic spring allergies (it's warmed up enough for stuff to start blooming). I guess I'll have to take some snot-drying drugs because I can't breathe enough to sleep. I just hate taking drugs at all, which is weird because before I decided to be a librarian, I was on the path to become a pharmacist. Drugs just really affect me (to me a pseudoephedrine might as well be actual meth) and I try to stay off of them completely. Except for the pill--I like to control my own destiny that way.

I guess it's a very good thing that I don't have many maladies, because I can't get in the habit of taking anything (allergy meds, acid reducer, vitamins), even if I set them RIGHT NEXT to the b.c. pills on the counter. It's like selective blindness. But anyway, my point is that I kind of wish I'd just get actually sick for real, stay home for a couple of days, and let that be that. This almost sick, then okay bullshit is getting OLD.

Er, maybe I shouldn't say that because half my department is out with a nasty flu that I don't want and the other half have real colds and are germing up the place. Not to mention to patrons and all their germs.

*R and I are taking a graduate educational research methods class together.
**No, really. I don't usually whine in my off-line life.

Winter in Wyoming is brutal. I do not enjoy seeing forecasts for a high of 8F and a low of -8F. So, -20 with wind chill. It means I can't go for long, fast walks, which is my primary fitness activity because a) it's unbearably cold and chaps my face and makes my ears hurt inside, and b) it's so icy and snowy that I'm sure to fall down and break out all my teeth or something. Here's what winter in Wyoming also means:

sleeping under two down duvets

keeping socks on during sex

wearing snow boots all day, even while attired in a dress

hearing yourself say, "Wow, it's nice out" when it's 25F

finding it perfectly acceptable to wear a cashmere cardigan over a cashmere sweater, with a cashmere wrap

driving at 15mph all over town

finally appreciating casseroles for dinner several times a week

staying in every night

It snows a lot here, but seems like it's usually overnight or in the afternoons. This morning it was coming down pretty well while I was driving to work. I was watching the hordes of miserable kids trooping to class from the dorms and thinking to myself that half of them looked like they were dressed for winter in Seattle, and therefore were too stupid to live. This is how I know I'm getting old.

R and I went out to dinner last night, which was nice and something we don't do often. After a stop at one of Laramie's many liquor stores for some fancy bourbon, we went to his place to have a couple of drinks and play a weird German board game. Then my allergies kicked in and I had the bad sense to take a chlorpheniramine, which has always treated me well, but with which I've never before had alcohol. Damn if it didn't knock me for a loop. This morning I woke up feeling like crap and I'm covering the opening shift for somebody on vacation. Also, I realize I left my watch and rings at R's. He's leaving for the weekend right after he teaches his last class today, so I'm hoping he noticed them on his dresser and brought them to campus with him today. You know that weird feeling when you don't have your usual jewelry on?

This morning was tough. I felt like o was in slow-motion and I ended up running out of time for breakfast, so I'm starving. I also just remembered that I left dinner leftovers in my car, which is going to smell really nice by the time I get out of here this evening. Ugh. So now I'm going to department coffee break at the faculty dining room and I will finally get to eat. Maybe that will make me feel better.
